Well lookit this. I’ve wanted a three speed fixed gear Sturmey Archer ASC for about 25 years, ever since I read about them on Sheldon Brown’s site.
The S3X had too much lash for me, and I broke a couple. Hopefully this will be more satisfying and successful for me, but in any case I’m excited to see for myself. If I don’t like it maybe I can trade someone for a TF two-speed fixed wheel.
I thought about how to rig this wheel up on my Quickbeam, but it doesn’t have extra cable stops, so I turned to my Special Needs RB-2.
The wheel came with an S3X bar end shifter and a 4 speed trigger. I looked all over for the rumored modification to make the 4 speed shifter work with the 3 speed hub, but my friend sent me this Hilary Stone article (he’s the GOAT) which ended with the line:
If you do not have the correct ASC trigger use a standard 4-speed trigger using positions 1, 2 and 4
Well that’s easy.
